During a recent meeting of
our members it was decided that we petition VDOT for an Underpass
for equestrian traffic under the new Route 3 expansion. Salubria
is the Ride destination for many of our members that live on the North
side of Route 3. One of our members, Leta Scherquist, manages
property for Salubria on both sides of Route 3 and frequently crosses
Route 3 on horseback to visit her neighbors. A four lane highway
is too dangerous to cross on horseback as you well know.
Without an underpass for horses some of us will not be able to safely ride to church on Sundays. Since the new road will be on the North side of Stevensburg Baptist Church.
The Casanova Hunt, foxhunts
from Salubria and Sherwood Farm north to Berry Hill Farm and many other
farms on the North side of the highway. There must be a safe way
for all horseback riders to cross. It is also our long term goal
to establish trails between Kelly’s Ford, Brandy Station and Stevensburg.
Although these activities and interests seem insignificant, they are major sources of revenue for the county, as part of the $1.8 billion dollar a year Virginia horse industry.
If these activities are not
included in the planning of highways and developments a significant
part of our economy will suffer.
We therefore urge you to provide
an underpass for horseback riders, in the vicinity of Salubria, under
the new Route 3.
Sincerely,
